As a printmaker, I create compositions that reflect my desire for clarity… for simplification of shape and intriguing interplay between light and dark.
The light and dark is very literal in my black-and-white printmaker’s world, but is also obviously a pertinent metaphor in this time of religious war. If there was no dark, there would be no light…. and in the world of art there would be little to see, as most images are visible precisely because there is a contrast of some sort.
I find peace in carving away the negative space within my designs, leaving the shapes and lines that become the final compositions. The carving process of block printing is challenging in that the design has to be reversed before transferring it to the block, this adds a bit of mystery to the moment of actually pulling the first printed images it will be the first time I can really see what I have been working toward. Each stroke of the v-groove blade creates a space in the linoleum block…. This will show up as unprinted (white) space in the image. By contrast, when drawing, painting and etching, I am often creating areas of color (or black or sepia) with each stroke of the drawing implement, brush or engraving tool.
I am exploring ways in which my art can more fully integrate and express my spiritual work: the study and practice of shamanic healing. My many forms of artistic expression are the pathways through this process of integration. My latest images are inspired by the concept of the amulet: an object or image given power through the intentional energy of human visualization and ritual, such as prayer. Currently I am working on simple, small powerful designs…. totem animals, symbols of love, patterns of Nature and sacred geometry. My designs include elements of numerology and symbols of healing aspects of prayer rituals.
The world appears to be straining under the weight of our complexities. It is my intention to help raise the vibrational energy of the world…. toward loving interaction… to the best of my ability, with beauty, humor, sincerity and lovingly created works of art and poetry. There is much to be grateful for.
Peace.
